| ABOUT TIVOLIFEST 2008 TivoliFest is a Danish celebration held every year on Memorial Day weekend in Elk Horn, Iowa. This annual weekend-long celebration of the Danish heritage of Elk Horn celebrates Iowa’s many Danes and is filled with promise each year to be better than the last. Tivoli Fest starts Saturday morning with a flag raising ceremony at the Danish Windmill followed by the “Mill to Mermaid Run.” This 3-mile fun run/walk is for young and old alike and starts at the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn, continuing north to Kimballton, ending at the statue of the Little Mermaid sitting in the fountain in the city park. This reproduction of the famous mermaid in Copenhagen was erected as a tribute to Hans Christian Andersen in 1978. Throughout the weekend there is always plenty of entertainment, shopping for all things Danish, lots of traditional food, activities for children, tours of The Danish Immigrant Museum, Bedstemor’s House, The Danish Windmill, and more than enough genuine Danish hospitality to go around. As part of the Tivoli Fest celebration, The Danish Immigrant Museum’s Family History & Genealogy Center (FHGC) located on Main Street, has a photo display with a different theme each year. The theme for 2008 is “Early Kimballtonians” spotlighting early residents of the “North Danish Village” of Kimballton, which is celebrating its 150th (sesquicentennial) anniversary this year.
