In 1940, inspired by the birth of Princess Margrethe, several goldsmith companies in Denmark started making daisy-shaped jewelry like these earrings. Denmark had just been occupied by the German army and the birth of the new princess came to symbolize hope and “Danish-ness” in this dark period.

The daisy, also known as the “marguerite,” shares its name with Queen Margrethe, who celebrated her 70th birthday on April 16, 2010. Daisy earrings are still made and worn in Denmark today, an enduring symbol of the affection that Danes feel for their queen.
