Evelyn Matthies grew up in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and then moved farther north to Brainerd, Minnesota. She has spent her career as an artist and art educator, working especially in acrylics and watercolor. Her grandparents emigrated from Denmark, which inspired her to travel to their homeland.

Matthies comments on this piece:
"Our first trip to Denmark was filled with many surprises. One of the surprises was the bright, happy colors on the exterior of the buildings. The simple geometric shapes of the buildings were enhanced with these colors."

Evelyn Matthies was featured in the museum's Danish-American Artist Series with an exhibition on view from January 23 through July 11, 2010.
