Ellen Sophie Sørensen’s life was somewhat more peripatetic than most Danish immigrants of her day, but it was certainly a foretaste of the internationalism characteristic of Danes living in the U.S. today. Born in Silkeborg (Skanderborg County) in Jutland in 1905, Ellen’s childhood was spent in this home in the suburb of Alderslyst with its unique two-story balcony. Her father Martin Sørensen was a master shoemaker.

In 1926 Ellen married Danish-born Walter Dencker, who had emigrated earlier and by then was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Soon after their marriage the couple left for the Philippines, where their first home was this vine-covered bungalow at Camp John Hay near Baguio in the mountains of northern Luzon. Later, they lived in a villa in Manila.
