Heady Stuff (Hatte og Huer)

Ane Catrine Nielsdatter (1828-after 1909) was born in Lydum parish, Ribe County, in western Jutland. Her husband, Niels Christian Thomsen, suffered a war injury that left him unable to do heavy labor, so Ane Catrine cooked and worked for nearby farmers to support the family. A son, Andreas Nielsen, immigrated to the U.S. Ane Catrine was 81 years old at the time this photo was taken; her still-dark hair is covered by the headscarf often worn by married peasant women.
