Confirmation: Coming of Age in Denmark and the US

Anna, the youngest of 16 children, came from a very poor family. Only her father was living, since her mother had died when she was less than a year old. Her confirmation party was not a fancy one; her grown-up brothers and sisters were the only guests. Anna felt that she was lucky in that she didn't have to go out to work until after her confirmation. In poor families it was very common at the time - especially during the Great Depression - that one had to start working before one was confirmed. Such had been the case for many of her older siblings. Despite the underlying circumstances, Anna looks happy to be considered a grown-up.
