In Service to Country - New and Old

Chris Petersen was born in Frøslev, Denmark in 1889, immigrated prior to WWI, and farmed in the Omaha area. He initially enlisted in 1918 in the Quartermaster Corps, Baker Company, for 15 months as a PFC, and re-enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Service in July 1919, at Ft. Russell, Wyoming, where he was assigned to airplane rigging. He received his honorable discharge from March Field, California on July 17, 1920. Like many Danes, Chris had a droll sense of humor. Prior to being shipped to France he paused with a fellow Dane from his unit to have this light-hearted photo of “life in military service” taken in New York City. After the war Chris married Anna S. Jensen, also a Danish immigrant, and lived several places in Wisconsin. He died in 1977. Copies of Chris Petersen’s military papers are on file in the FHGC.
