In Service to Country - New and Old

On February 24, 1944, a B-17 on which Staff Sgt. Edwin W. Hays was a tail gunner got into a dogfight with a German FW-190. Both planes crashed in southern Jutland near Tønder, about two miles north of the German border. The injured Edwin was taken by bicycle by a 15-year-old farm boy to his home, and then transferred to a Tønder hospital before becoming a German POW. The wreckage of his plane was watched over by these two unidentified Danish Home Guards before the Germans could arrive.
