Hans Christian came to this country as a young boy from Ladby parish near Næstved; Christine came with a younger sister at the age of 15 from Helsingør. Hans Christian told his children that he first noticed Christine when he heard her silk skirts swishing on the town sidewalk, and fell in love soon afterwards. Shortly before their marriage, Christine worked as a domestic in the household of Hans Christian’s widowed mother.
