Henry O. Thompson grew up in St. Edwards, Nebraska, a bilingual Danish-American community. He served with the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry Regiment, one of three regiments formed in the aftermath of the blowing up of the Maine” in Cuba, which led to U. S. involvement in the Spanish-American War (1898). Henry's unit was sent to the Philippines to quell what became known as the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902). “The 1st Nebraska Vol. Regiment proved to be an exceptional unit with a wide reputation as one of the toughest fighting infantry units during its tour in the islands from July 1898 to July 1899.” Pvt. Thompson kept a diary of his activities during this time which has been published by Lur Press, in Blair, Nebraska. His military trunk and contents was donated to the museum.
