James Nelson, the son of Danish immigrants, grew up in the Poplar area, where Esther’s parents owned the general store. There was a dance hall above the store which was popular among the young people of the area, and this is probably where they met. James farmed with his father and brothers until he purchased a farm in Jackson Township. He and Esther married in the Poplar church on February 16, 1916, and lived on the farm until James no longer was able to farm. They moved to Kimballton in 1945. They had no children of their own, but often had nieces and nephews living with them on the farm.
