Kristen Nielsen, was born in Mou, near the city of Aalborg in northern Jutland, in 1879, and served in the Danish Marines in D:7, Battery No. 43 in Aarhus from 1899-1900. Following his discharge Kristen immigrated to the U. S., then returned to Denmark in 1904 to bring back his fiancée, Johanne Elizabeth Marie Christensen. The couple settled in Cass County, Iowa, where they had three children. Kristen became known as Chris Nelson, one of the many Danes who “Americanized” their names. He died on 17 October 1954.
