Ole Daniel Jensen was born in Klampenborg, a coastal community north of Copenhagen, in 1897. He immigrated to Harlan, Iowa, in 1907 to live with two sisters near Exira. In 1912, at the age of 15, he wanted to enlist in the Army, so he told the authorities that he was born in North Dakota in 1895, and subsequently spent two years in Hawaii. There he contracted malaria and was discharged. In 1916 he enlisted once again and this time was assigned to Company A, 1st Infantry, of the North Dakota National Guard. He was called into active duty along the Mexican border for several months, re-assigned to the National Guard, called up for active service when the U.S. entered WWI, and eventually sent overseas. He was discharged as a sergeant in March, 1919.

Following the war, Ole worked as a railroad fireman and married a Brayton, Iowa, native. He was also employed by the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, and worked in packing plants and as a house painter. He died in 1973 in Omaha, Nebraska, and where he was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery.
