Rasmus Hansen, born in Borre parish on the island of Møn in Præstø County, also served in the 1864 hostilities. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1867, first living in Moline, Illinois, before moving to Atlantic, Iowa, and finally to Elk Horn. He died on 23 April 1923.

The lower photograph, taken in 1918, is from the Omaha World Herald and shows the Danish veteran Rasmus Hansen with his son, Alfred, who was enlisting in the US Army in Omaha, Nebraska. Four of Rasmus’ sons – Harold, Wilhelm, Alfred and Benjamin – served in WWI. His grandson, Arnt Bruhn, was killed in France in 1918.
