Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park
The park will celebrate the Danish immigrant who designed elements of the Chicago Park system and who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright. Jensen pioneered “the prairie school” of landscape architecture that focused attention on using native plantings to emulate natural environments. This new outdoor venue will provide picturesque landscaping, pergola covered picnic area, walkways, sculptures and a pond for a more meaningful Museum experience. The park will include two recreated Danish “free-holder's” cottages. One will illustrate mid-19th century life in rural Denmark that inspired emigration; the other will have a modern interior and provide housing for the Museum’s interns.
In combination with the proposed Forsamlingshuset cultural exhibit building, the Jens Jensen Prairie Landscape Park will create additional space for hosting special activities such as Danish-American festivals, community events, business meetings, banquets and receptions. An audience interested in horticulture will be attracted to this park.
