Albert Eve became a member of the Royal Danish Life Guards in 1919 at the age of 20, when this picture was taken. The Guardsmen are the popular tourist attraction in Copenhagen, where they stand guard outside Amalienborg Palace in their full dress uniforms with bearskin hats. Albert was proud of his experience with the Guards and considered it an elite group of soldiers who were much better than those in the regular army. When he was in Guards basic training he broke a bone in his wrist during a training exercise but told no one about the injury until after he had graduated, afraid that he might be eliminated from the group and reassigned to the regular army. Albert emigrated to the U.S. in 1928 and worked in Chicago at odd jobs before purchasing an ice business with a friend. When Denmark was invaded by Germany in 1940 he, like many other Danish immigrants, had to endure five years with no communication with his family back home. Albert was an active member of the Chicago Royal Guards Society until his death in 1967.
