Anders was born on October 17, 1873, in Timring, Ringkøbing County in southwestern Jutland. He served as a dragoon in the Danish army (mounted troops) in the late 1890s before coming to the U.S. at the age of 28. He first went to Wyoming, where a cousin was a gold miner, then came to Omaha and found employment as a milk hauler. He visited Denmark in 1916 and 1920. He met his future wife, Petrea Petersen, during the latter visit. They were married in the Audubon County courthouse on Feb. 8, 1921. They first moved to a farm west of Hamlin, but returned to Denmark in 1922 and bought an acreage near Ringkøbing, where their first two children, Harold (who died at the age of 3 months) and Mildred, were born. In 1925 they discovered that they would have to return to Iowa when economic hard times resulted in a farm near Poplar that Anders earlier had sold reverting to their possession. For several years he was custodian of the Poplar church. He died of lung cancer and is buried in the Kimballton Cemetery.
