For those who were not able to work due to illness or injury the Danish and German government offered and offers a disability pension.

The 24 year old Martin Thomsen signed up for the German disability pension in 1907 though of presumably sound mind and body because he did not wish to serve in the German army. He came from the South of Jutland then under German rule so while he was Danish he would have been obliged to serve in the German army.

Shortly after this he emigrated to America to avoid military service once and for all.
