Egon emigrated from Hjørring, Denmark, at the age of seven with his parents, Jens Ahlman and Johanne (Thomsen) Simonsen and sister Harriet – also featured in this exhibit. After arriving at Ellis Island and spending a brief time in Minnesota, the family settled in the Corley/Avoca area to begin their new life as farmers. Egon attended local country schools. ~~ Alice was born in 1925 on her family farm five miles south of Elk Horn, attending Clay #7 school and graduating from Elk Horn High School. ~~ While looking for a ‘cute blonde,’ Egon met Alice while cruising with buddies through Elk Horn in a Buick convertible one summer Saturday night in 1944. The rest is history!! Egon and Alice were married on January 24, 1946 in the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. A quick honeymoon was spent at a nice hotel in Omaha. They made their first home north of Avoca until the spring of 1948, when they moved to Alice’s home place, where they raised 3 children: Steve, Neil and Jana. The couple enjoyed many nice vacations or ‘honeymoons,’ and their claim to fame is that they managed to visit every state in the nation but two. And they were able to visit Denmark once as well. They moved to Elk Horn in the fall of 1999. Alice passed away in May of 2005; Egon still lives at home, having just celebrated his 91st birthday.
