Heady Stuff (Hatte og Huer)

This wistful but dignified portrait of Karoline Christensen Nielsen (ca.1815-ca.1898) perhaps reflects a certain disappointment in life. Married to Niels Christensen aka Nielsen prior to 1845, probably in southern Jutland, she immigrated to the Midwest with her daughter Martine in the late 19th century. Although she was awarded a homestead land patent in Marshall County, South Dakota, she died prior to receiving her title, which went to her heirs. She and her husband had at least 7 children, most of whom also immigrated.
