Heady Stuff (Hatte og Huer)

This portrait of Maren Kierstine Jensdatter (1832-1902), wife of Thomas Christensen, was probably taken for her passport at the time she emigrated from Hurup parish in Thisted County in 1893. She is wearing the headscarf that was the ‘accepted’ head covering for peasant women of the era. Several of her children came to the U.S. Maren lived with her daughter Mattie Andersen near Arlington, SD until her death.
