A Smorgasbord of Danish Immigrants

Four Hansen brothers were part of a family of 11 children in Lille Rise Parish on the island of Ærø. Rasmus Hansen was the first to leave, in 1883. He settled in Jackson Twp. in Shelby County. He married Maren Eline Andersen, a native of Marstal, in 1889, and realized his dream of becoming a prosperous farmer.

The next brother to come, Simon, arrived in 1886. He decided to join other Ærø natives in Fairfield, Washington. Shortly thereafter, two other brothers, Hans and Christ, joined him in Fairfield. All three married daughters of Hans & Dorthea Marie Jorgensen Therkelsen: Simon to Ellen Marie, Hans C. to Hansine, and Christ to Georgine.
