Original exhibition developed by Arken Museum of Modern Art (Ishøj, Denmark)
American tour organized by the Museum of Danish America (Elk Horn, Iowa)

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) is an artist who embraced it all. One-off ceramics, plaques, posters, theatrical costumes, stage design, tapestries and large sculptures. From the smallest to the largest, from the hand-made to the mass-produced. Like some exotic bird he landed in 1945 in the midst of Danish art and design history. From there he left his clear imprint on the visual culture of the coming decades with his fantastical, always recognizable line and style.

The Whimsical World of Bjørn Wiinblad celebrates Wiinblad’s career and explores how his vision encompassed every aspect of life. In one part of the gallery visitors will see examples of his best-known work in ceramics and graphic art. In another corner, a Wiinblad-designed jigsaw puzzle is on a table, with a chair made more inviting by a Wiinblad-designed throw pillow. From his most popular collectibles to unique examples of textile art, this retrospective exhibit engages both long-time and new fans of Wiinblad’s work.

The Whimsical World of Bjørn Wiinblad is made possible by support from the following:

  • Albert V. Ravenholt Fund, Seattle
  • Iowa Arts Council, Des Moines, Iowa
  • American-Scandinavian Foundation, New York, New York
  • The Danish Home, Croton-on-Hudson, New York

An exhibit catalog has been created to complement the tour. It is the most comprehensive volume of Wiinblad's life and work ever published. Get a copy through our Design Store >
