Position Overview:
The Museum of Danish America a is seeking a part-time manager for the Genealogy Department of the Museum’s Genealogy & Education Center in Elk Horn. Responsibilities include management of day-to-day operations, coordinating research and translation services for patrons and managing volunteer schedules and projects. The successful candidate must have prior management or supervisory experience, excellent technology skills, including office software applications and social media; ability to meet deadlines and perform detailed work with accuracy; ability to structure one’s own work schedule and work independently; strong written and oral communication skills, including devotion to delivering quality customer service. Applicants with proven experience in genealogy research will be given preference. Hours are Wednesday – Friday, approximately 20 hours per week with some flexibility; Starting wage is $22 per hour. SUMMARY
The Genealogy Center Manager handles the daily administrative operations for the Genealogy Department of the Museum’s Genealogy & Education Center, working closely with the Youth & Community Educator. This position reports to the Executive Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Genealogy Department.
- Coordinate genealogical research and translation services for patrons with contracted researchers, volunteers, and/or interns.
- Manage volunteer schedules and projects.
- Conduct tours of the GEC explaining its services and resources, and give programs related to Danish and Danish-American family history and genealogy.
- Update the Genealogy Department’s Facebook group and website page as needed.
- Process accessions and catalog donations/purchases.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position supervises a core group of volunteers and works closely with a contractor who works on-site. From time-to-time this position may supervise an intern.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Prior management or supervisory experience.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize , multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of computers and computer software, particularly Microsoft Office, and the ability to adapt to and / or learn new software.
- Ability to maintain a good working relationship with all co-workers and the public and to use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to effectively present information about the Museum and its purpose to the general public; ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the general public; ability to effectively present information to supervisors and/or co-workers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent and sales tax.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.
