Jazz is in many ways a distinctively American art form, but it is one that is beloved in Denmark. Valdemar Eiberg assembled the first jazz group in Denmark in 1924, and since then the musical style has exploded in popularity. Americans like Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie performed in Denmark, and Danes like Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen left their mark on American groups.

In the present day, Danish jazz is celebrated through major festivals in Copenhagen and Aarhus, with new and popular musicians bringing a new flavor to contemporary improvisation.
