The China Chair

A chair fit for a queen

This chair is one of two chairs commissioned by Queen Margrethe II.  This one was given by the Queen to Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, when she visited the campus in 1976.

The China Chair, designed by Hans Wegner in 1944, is a good example of the timelessness of Danish design. Wegner took inspiration from the aesthetics of Chinese design from the 17th and 18th century. In his modern interpretation, he demonstrates his flair for expressive and sculptural functionalism. The China Chair shows Wegner’s belief that furniture should be beautiful from all angles, as freestanding monuments to the inseparable relationship between handcrafted forms and natural materials.
